4 awesome ass-numbing hours…pt 2

Correction…  4.4 awesome ass-numbing hours.  Last night was the night that I went to see Tristan and Isolde at the Lryic Opera here in Chicago.  I sat up in the upper balcony which leaves one with two experiences.  First, you have the experience of the opera itself and second, you have the experience that can only be afforded by sitting in the upper balcony.  Upper balcony 2 actually.

Tristan, Clifton Forbis, had been battling a severe cold all week, so the announcement went.  He asked our indulgence, so the announcer said.  Minus, what seemed to be a little projection issue from time to time, he seemed to be able to work through it without any problems audible to the audience.  Isolde, Deborah Voight, was splendid as was the rest of the cast.  The orchestra played extremely well.  It always amuses me to look into the pit and see the brass players reading.  Overall, 9 our of 10 from this panel of 1.  It was awesome!

Now for the second experience.  Where do I begin?  Just as the overture began — which is something that you certainly don’t want to miss nor listen too with other noises going on around you — a mother and daughter rush in and take their seats directly behind us.  They would be a part of the opera ambience for the entirety of the evening.  When they had first sat down they had to discuss how they just made it and the mother was describing how she needed to catch her breath.  Well, I did not need that knowledge.  Her breathing, which was louder than the soft playing of the orchestra was ample indication.  Throughout the evening the sounds of their snoring accompanied various parts of the opera.  Now for the lady that sat directly in front of me.  (Let’s first say that these seats leave me just enough room to sit with no extra room to spare.) Well, this lady seemed to be infatuated with my knees.  She twice leaned her head back as if my knees were sent from heaven to be used as a pillow for her.  When she wasn’t leaning her head against my knees she was stretching as if to get warmed up for a serious workout.  This stretching included hitting my knees with her elbows on multiple occasions.

4 awesome ass-numbing hours…pt 1

This coming Tuesday I am going see Tristan and Isolde at the Lyric Opera.  If only I had taken Dr. Murphy’s class in grad school about Tristan…what was I thinking taking Midieval & Renaissance instead?  Oh yeah, I had too.  Requirments are troublesome to the mind.  Maybe I should have learned more in undergrad and this whole blog would have taken a completely different shape.  Putting the past aside, let’s take a look to the future.  I’ll be enjoying Wagner’s opera, taking in the hours of orchestral color and tragic passion…

Thought for Today

A quick thought for you to ponder while you go about your day.  This is something that I decided yesterday but have not yet reconciled.  “The problem is that one is not enough, but two is to many”.  Pick up that cup of coffee sitting next to you on your desk, take some time to ponder and wax poetically about the solution.

(I’ve added a picture to aide contemplation)

Self Titled…AA not SS

Contrary to popular belief, it happens to be spelled with 2 a’s and not 2 s’s.  I have always known this to be an issue for atleast 90% of people that have tried, which is odd given the fact that I have never seen 2 s’s.  Is it the fact that people just don’t pay attention?  Which really doesn’t make any sense seeing that one will probably have only seen the correctly spelling.  What is it about the name that draws people to the wrong spelling?  Sure, if you try it phonetically, 2 a’s surely doesn’t make sense.  It’s language though and especially given the english language, when was the last time that you counted on something being spelled the way it sounds?  A good portion of the time, this will lead you down the path to incorrect spelling.  That particular point makes this entire blog rather ironic given my spelling ability or lack there of.  However, given a person’s name, I go out of my way to try and make sure that I get it correct.  This point is especially true if I have seen it in writing or have access to the correct spelling.  What is the point of all of this madness?  Simple.  My name is spelled with 2 a’s and 1 s.  I’m not even lying.  True statement.  If you scroll to the top of the screen you can see for yourself.

Ok, now that you are back and we’ve reached a unanimous verdict.  Until next time…
